Susie Peters and the Kiowa Six

The Kiowa Six was a group of famed Kiowa artists from Anadarko. One of their mentors, Susie Peters was actually Charlotte Susan “Susie” (Ryan Swain) Peters. She was married at Alex in 1891 to a US Deputy Marshal she met during the investigation of a murder at old Fred, an Indian Territory town just up the trail from Old Alex. Nothing remains today to mark the site of Fred but in my upcoming book the actual site of the old town has been pinpointed for the first time.

After her territorial lawman husband died young, Susie went on to spend many years among the Kiowa. She was inducted posthumously into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame in 1982 and is buried in Purcell.
